Coaches
CFA wishes to recognize and thank the people that have volunteered so much time over the years to coach free of
charge and helped make CFA what it is today. Without their hard work and dedication, we would never have made
it this far.
James Faine - Director, Founder, Coach
Coach Faine first began fencing in Junior High. Since then he has been dedicated to martial arts
and the art of the sword in many forms. In addition to his sport fencing background, Coach Faine is also
skilled in historical and theatrical fencing, Shinkendo, and Kenjutsu.
Since founding the CFA, some of Coach Faine's students have gone on to become coaches themselves. Many other students have excelled competitively, earning medals and ratings in collegiate and national level tournaments.

- Head Coach of the Charlottesville High School Fencing Club

- Proud member of the United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA)
- Registered coach with the United States Fencing Association (USFA)
- Nationally rated in foil, epee, and saber
Dorothy Carney - Coach
Dorothy was foil coach for the UVA team before moving on to Notre Dame
University where she was the Women's Team Foil Captain for two years. During her college fencing career Dorothy medaled in numerous Collegiate and USFA events. Since returning to fencing, Dorothy brought home CFA's first National Medal, has won multiple other USFA medals, competes nationally in the USFA Veterans circuit (currently 8th in the nation), and has won the VA Division's Jefferson Cup for several years running. She is currently a teacher at Buford Middle School and will be leading the Buford Fencing Club program there as well as coaching foil with CFA on Monday nights.
Joseph Shea-Hackett - Assistant Coach
Coach Shea began fencing with the Buford program many years ago and has grown into one of the top fencers in the state. Joseph is an accomplished fencer with numerous USFA wins to his credit. Among Joseph's competitive accomplishments are numerous VA Commonwealth Championships, The VA Division team epee Championship and VA School Fencing League Championships. He is also a several time Junior Olympian in Epee. Joseph recently won a scholarship to Ohio State University where he will continue fencing with one of the strongest NCAA fencing programs in the country.
Ken Fales - Assistant Coach
Coach Fales begin fencing in college at Michigan State University where he eventually became Men's Foil Captain and Armourer. Since joining CFA, Coach Fales has become rated in all three weapons and is a very active competitor on the USFA Regional circuit. Coach Fales offers private lesson as well as teaching our C1 Foil and Thursday night beginner’s classes.
Ilana Sinkin - Assistant Coach
Coach Sinkin has a long fencing history before joining CFA. She has represented the US in numerous international competitions, was a Junior Olympic Medalist, an A rated USFA foil fencer, and a NCAA All American while fencing with the University of Pennsylvania. Coach Sinkin offers private lessons in foil by appointment.
