Coaches

CFA wishes to recognize and thank the people that have volunteered so much time over the years to coach free of charge and helped make CFA what it is today. Without their hard work and dedication, we would never have made it this far.

James Faine - Director, Founder, Coach
Coach Faine first began fencing in Junior High. Since then he has been dedicated to martial arts and the art of the sword in many forms. In addition to his sport fencing background, Coach Faine is also skilled in historical and theatrical fencing, shinkendo, kenjutsu, and other open-hand and weapon-based martial arts.
Since founding the CFA, some of Coach Faine's students have gone on to become coaches themselves. Other students have excelled competitively, earning medals and ratings in collegiate and national level tournaments; a few have even qualified to fence in the Junior Olympics.

Some of Coach Faine's personal fencing accomplishments include:

  • Head Coach of the Grymes Fencing Club
  • Head Coach of the Buford Fencing Club
  • Vice Chair of the Virginia Division of the USFA
  • Proud member of the United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA)
  • Registered coach with the United States Fencing Association (USFA)
  • Nationally rated in foil, epee, and saber
  • Team Epee Gold medalist, Virginia Commonwealth Games, 2004, 2005, 2006
  • Numerous other medals in USFA competition

Dorothy Carney - Coach
Dorothy was foil coach for the UVA team before moving on to Notre Dame University where she was the Women's Team Foil Captain for two years. During her college fencing career Dorothy medaled in numerous Collegiate and USFA events. Since returning to fencing, Dorothy has won multiple USFA medals, competes nationally in the USFA Veterans circuit, and has won the VA Division's Jefferson Cup for V3W in 2006. She is currently a teacher at Buford Middle School and will be leading the student/youth program there as well as with the CFA.

Jason Levin - Saber Coach
Coach Levin has a very distinguished fencing career with numerous Divison, Sectional, and collegiate wins. Coach Levin has earned NAC and FIE medals, been a member of the US Junior National Team, and represented the US in numerous international and FIE events. He is also a two time NCAA Team Champion, a three time NCAA All American, and former Captain of the Penn State Men's Fencing Team.

Joseph Shea-Hackett - Assistant Coach
Joseph is an accomplished fencer on the Division level with numerous Virginia Division medals. Joseph is also the reigning Commonwealth One Touch Epee Champion and Commonwealth Team Epee gold medalist. Joseph fences Nationally at the Div 1 level in epee and recently qualified to represent VA and CFA at the Junior Olympic Championships in epee. He earned his B08 in epee at the 2008 Cherry Blossom Open.



Board of Directors

In 2004, we began pursuing non-profit status for CFA. To assist in that goal and with the management of the club, CFA has a member elected board of directors. We greatly appreciate the experience, dedication, and time these club members contribute to the success of CFA.
